Dethatching is the machine process of  removing thatch(decomposing stems, roots, and other debris) from the lawn area. This is important because if it is not done every few years thatch can build up and hamper the growth of your yard leading to bare spots and thin spots in your yard.  Thatching does not need done every year but should be done every few years to keep a healthy lawn.
